OMG - This is the 3rd time I've tried to get this post going after writing very beautiful, eloquent words (ha) and attaching a photo - everything goes haywire, kaplooey. Anyway - let's try one more time...I talked about loving the process that I've used in these last few paintings. That I think I'm gaining ground on what I have been wanting to say in my work, and how I've been wanting to say it. i love what the palette knife can do - after years of practice, I'm beginning to get a 'grip' on how to control it. It can be very unpredictable, but oh so beautiful when a stroke lays down as planned. I also am plugging my upcoming workshops - next one here in Winter Garden Fl., at end of Sept. I'll post more about it soon. If you want details right away, just message or email me. And I talked about how it's tricky as a teacher to find your own path evolving faster than you can teach students who are signed up to learn your experience; see you share your knowledge, etc. based on what they've seen you do last week. A hoot, and confusing. That said - I LOVE, LOVE teaching and haven't found myself in any real predicaments at all. For anyone who cares to know - I wear my heart on my sleeve. My teaching is really part that and part sharing my personal experience in life. How hard it is to be an artist and a human being at the same time. How inexplicably disastrous our efforts can be and how deliriously joyful they can be too. All depends on our perceptions of reality at any given time. It's important for students to see teachers struggle - that's how they learn best. Wouldn't want to send anyone out into the art world thinking they'll make a million off one successful painting after another. Blah blah - sign up for my workshop if you want to hear more about my philosophies : ) I also teach private instruction!

Finding Beauties, Sold

Still painting smalls.  Gearing up slowly for bigs.  Experimenting with new surfaces and substrates.  For a long time I've used Centurion Linen sheets mounted on either superior quality gatorboard (which survives a surprising amount of abuse) or Ampersand gessoboard - which is more recently. Going through my stock (you know, the stuff that we buy then squirrel away for use in the next brilliant painting, which will obviously be better because of it...then forget we have it), I found some Ampersand wood blocks 4x4".  I never used them for anything because I hadn't realized I ordered the ones that were about 1.5" thicker than I wanted.  Anyway - found them yesterday and decided to try them out for my smalls.  Being impatient and ill prepared to do this the right way, I painted directly on the wood without any kind of priming.  Loved the light color of the natural wood - very useful in establishing values right away.  And really love the way my knife sails right over the surface. Which solves a lot of the issues I have with poorly made strokes. They are never perfect as in my mind, but I think maybe on this wood I have a better chance of making the strokes I intend.  I have developed a HUGE pet peeve about unexpected dips and valleys in my knife strokes - especially around my figural pieces. It's because I use the movement and direction of the knife to support the overall design. Knives create depth in the paint.  For me, I think this must be studied carefully before making the marks. Sometimes I think about the next single stroke for a very long time. Might be akin to surgery. Not sure how I ended up with this mind set after beginning my knife painting adventure years ago with large canvases so that I could experience freedom and spontaneity. These smalls, though, have turned out to be invaluable little lessons in all the important things that go into successful painting. This painting has strengths and weaknesses.  I am trying to let go of the harsh judgements I make and find contentment in the parts that are good and sound.

Beach Tot, Sold

Choosing the right colors/color temperatures and values.  I began the painting with a wash of very thinned out burnt sienna.  Applied with a brush - again, looking for the joints of the figure and emphasizing them by pushing down on the brush tip, then continuing on to the next with as much of a calligraphic quality as possible in this small size.  Easier to do with a brush than with a knife.  Laid down the rest of the color notes with brush, then dove in with my knives to commit the color choices (with all their relative inherent features - value, temp etc.) and add features of the palette knive -  stroke direction, depth, hard edge, tapered edge etc.  Am happy with the result, though I feel that the shadow underneath the tot could be lighter.

Mom and Me - June Palette Knife Workshop Information

Mom and Me - 201408, Sold
4x4" Oil on Linen
This painting is sold but I may have others like it!
A different color theme adapted from an earlier painting I did last year.  That painting "Redheads", drew a lot of admirers and I wanted to see if this one would as well.  In the last several paintings I have done, I have used colors that are much more earthy.  One because I wanted to explore them more as realistic colors, and two because I wanted to see how people respond to them as compared to the others. In this one, Me and Mom, the bold colors are back. It's safe to say that you all much prefer the more vibrant colors that I have made a habit of using.  I'm missing my usual one or two comments : )  Strange how we as artists can really like a painting, only to find out that others don't so much.

Upcoming palette knife workshop at the 127 SoBo Art Gallery Classroom

The Dancing Fool by Sally Shisler

The Dancing Fool - 201407
4x4" Oil on Linen
I really enjoy the challenge of creating the effect of movement in a figure.  The human body can be contorted into so many positions.  When it's standing still in anatomical position, whether from the front, back or sides, you pretty much get vertical angles that draw the viewers eye up and down. Without any added movement in the negative space around the figure, things can look kind of static.  So I work on creating compositional design throughout the image, marrying positive space (the figure) and negative space (everything else) with narrow knife strokes that continue through the spaces.  Make any sense?  It can be done in any number of ways, but this one is usually a sure bet if well planned.
